How to Install a Printer Driver Remotely

by Ruri Ranbe, Demand Media
Business administrators can use the "printui.exe" command in Windows to install and manage printing devices on all of the workstations in an office. You can run the command in the CMD window to install a printer driver to a local or a remote computer.
Step 1Sign on to the remote machine. Click Start and then enter "command" into the search field.
Step 2Point to "Command Prompt." Press "Ctrl-Shift-Enter" to launch the application with administrative rights.
Step 3Execute the command "hostname" (minus the quotes) to find the name of the computer.
Step 4Sign on to the local computer. Open Command Prompt following the same instructions as above.
Step 5Enter the following command into Command Prompt:
printui.exe /if /c\\[Hostname] /m "[Model]" /f "[INF]" /r "[Port]
Step 6Replace "[Hostname]" with the name of the remote computer, "[Model]" with the exact name of the printer, "[INF]" with the full file path linking to the INF driver and "[Port]" with the connection through which the printer connects.
The following command, for example, installs to a remote computer "MyPC" the USB printer KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 1600W:
printui.exe /if /c\\MyPC /m "KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 1600W" /f "C:\Users\Me\Driver.Inf" /r "USB001"
Step 7Press "Enter" to execute the command and install the driver file to the remote computer.
